Observance of the day

Rosh Hashanah is observed as a day of rest (Leviticus 23:24) like other Jewish holidays. When not on Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah is characterized by the blowing of the shofar, a trumpet made from a ram's horn and not from the horn of any other kind of animal, intended to symbolically awaken the listeners from their "slumbers" and alert them to the coming judgment.
